16/11/2016-UCAS trip

Today is a special day, yesterday after a contextual trip, visited the Museum of Art, today we are going to participate in ucas school counseling. After nearly two hours of driving, we came to a building in London. For the first time, feel special luxury. Then all of us went to the entrance to the council by the printed ticket.

There are many schools of arts, schools, and many schools in Edinburgh, London, Norwich, Nottingham, and so on. Every time I go through a school counseling office, will take their books to see, there are a lot of student works, as well as the introduction of school life, etc., the production is very beautiful, of course, these are some general highlights. Many schools will give students passing a small gift, I got a school to the candy, as well as ual bag, which is filled with the school I am interested in the introduction of the book.img_20161116_122139.jpg

I am most interested in the school is london college of fashion, Westminster, Kingston three schools. I took a lot of these three schools of books, in order to let myself better understand these schools. Central Saint Martin is a particularly good school, only enough to be creative enough to go, why I say that because I saw their school works, works are crazy enough imaginative enough.

Read a lot of schools, I began to firm my own beliefs, I have to work hard to prepare my English grades and my protflio, in order to go to the school they want to fight is worth it. I will make my best efforts to make the best works.

the afternoon, we went back to school after lunch, and I was thinking all the way to my formal class, when I began to do my own work, I will do how, I will not have progress compared to before. I think all the speculation is unrealistic, I should start from now, the only way to have good results.

Today we are going to Fiji, an affiliated art museum in Norwich, the second largest museum I have ever visited in the UK. There are many projects in this museum, such as craft, painting, fashion, history and so on.
After more than an hour’s drive, we came to this museum. From the appearance point of view, this museum is particularly spectacular, I think it should be great. I put down my bag and my classmates went to the museum to visit.

The first piece that attracted me particularly was an abstract painting. The main colors are red black and gray, which I wanted to study after the art theme of depression like. Red represents the blood, black and gray represents the eyes of depressed patients the color of the world. Patterns like blood and bandage wrapped, tied and painful.

Oil on canvas

The second thing that attracted me was a hazy painting. The picture is like two people embracing. Obscure sense is a special attempt, although only see the outline, but can clearly show the author want to express the meaning. I will choose the subject is fashion design, I think I can go to try this form of expression, to increase my design inspiration.

The Two Sister 1926

Jules Pascin (1885-1930)

Production place: France

Oil on canvas

The first three works belong to the type of painting, I want to talk about other works belonging to the type of sculpture, some with Chinese elements. For example, the following figure, is a typical Chinese style, suddenly caught my eye. The sculpture on the left is a traditional stone lion, symbolizing the auspicious fortune into treasure safe. On the right of the sculpture is reflected in the seven eighteenth century Chinese people dressing way, long cloth, more folds.

And that period of v-collar fashion clothes. Women like to wear shoes. From this picture can only see a woman’s style of dress at that time.

That period of clothes are more loose, light and thin. Because you can see from the painting is obvious fold and wide cuffs.

This porcelain is also a Chinese work. This can be seen from the pattern above, this pattern is the traditional Chinese clothing and decorations with the most patterns, the Chinese Olympic Games torch inspiration similar to the clouds. A turtle shaped bottle, which also reflects the evolution of the shape of the ancient Chinese bottle. The tortoise symbolizes longevity, turtle shell is the most hard, so many people like to use turtle shells as protection and prayer longevity.

If you let me introduce this work, it is absolutely and all the previous works are not the same. This work may not inspire my design. But this work makes me the most interesting place when the little dancer upright gestures, pride and freedom, this is the two words that appear in my mind. I used to dream, has come with a dream today, do not know when I can like this little dancer, proud standing in front of others. I should have done a lot of effort to complete it, I also believe in myself.

Portrait of Joseph Roulin     1889

Vincent van Gogh
(Dutch, 1853–1890)

. Oil on canvas

naturalism

25 3/8 x 21 3/4″ (64.4 x 55.2 cm)

The dark tone of the entire work, dark green and dark blue is the main color. The middle of the painting is a person surrounded by flowers.

Van Gogh wrote to his brother Theo of his excitement about “the modern portrait,” a picture that renders character not by the imitation of the sitter’s appearance but through the independent, vivid life of color. Van Gogh’s subject in this painting, Joseph Roulin, worked for a post office in the French town of Arles. He was not a letter carrier but rather held a higher position as an official sorting mail at the train station. Van Gogh and Roulin lived on the same street and became close friends. Van Gogh painted many portraits of Roulin. This picture, which van Gogh boasted of having completed quickly, in a single session, was painted after Roulin got a better-paying job and left Arles. Some scholars think that this portrait was not painted from life but rather from memory or from previous portraits.

compare two drawings

The two paintings are similar in the same painting with a bearded middle-aged man, painting only draw the man’s upper body. Bearded parts are characterized by dense lines.

The first difference is that the first one is used in a painting with a pencil and the other one is oil painting, not the same way, one is more detailed characterization of character and image, the other is the use of lines to express the image of the characters.

From their performance techniques can be seen in different times, style and painting is a lot of different places. But the two paintings are painted the same as some of the details of the human face features.

The first picture of the time in the Netherlands, the impressionist period of the picture, so the paintings are based on the impression that the description, the basic will not be realistic and portrayed the scene, so there will be different backgrounds.

The abstract art of Picasso, popular in 1914, did not stand out as a clear-cut realism, but expressed the details of the mission without any religious significance, simply expressing a mood and an idea.

From these two pictures, I understand one of the most obvious reason is that no matter what a painting, it will represent an era of fashion trends and social background at the time. Each era will have a style of mutual correspondence, would like to know an era of development, from some works of art can be well studied.

NO.1- Write brief overview on Conceptual art and Land art

1.WHAT IS CONCEPTUAL ART

Conceptual art, sometimes simply called conceptualism, is art in which the concept(s) or idea(s) involved in the work take precedence over traditional aesthetic and material concerns. Some works of conceptual art, sometimes called installations, may be constructed by anyone simply by following a set of written instructions. This method was fundamental to American artist Sol LeWitt’s definition of Conceptual art, one of the first to appear in print.

Conceptual art, in my opinion, is an artistic expression with the artist’s own personality and ideas. The use of conceptual art is the realization of a surrealistic approach. In the works of the creators and artists of some conceptual art I see, there is a difference between conceptual art and reality.

2.WHAT IS LAND ART

Land artearthworks (coined by Robert Smithson), or Earth art is an art movement in which landscape and the work of art are inextricably linked. It is also an art form that is created in nature, using natural materials such as soil, rock (bed rock, boulders, stones), organic media (logs, branches, leaves), and water with introduced materials such as concrete, metal, asphalt, or mineral pigments. Sculptures are not placed in the landscape, rather, the landscape is the means of their creation. Often earth movingequipment is involved. The works frequently exist in the open, located well away from civilization, left to change and erode under natural conditions. Many of the first works, created in the deserts of Nevada, New Mexico, Utah or Arizona were ephemeral in nature and now only exist as video recordings or photographic documents. They also pioneered a category of art called site-specific sculpture, designed for a particular outdoor location.

Land art is a kind of art different from painting and fashion. I think land art is a kind of good thing which exists in real life but has short time. This kind of art is a unique expression of nature, and I like it. Maybe it only exists in the photo, but I still think it has its unique charm.

NO.2- Discuss two works of conceptual art and their relationship to the idea (concept) rather than a traditional ‘work of art’

1.Joseph Kosuth, One and Three Chairs (1965)

kosuth_oneandthreechairs

2.Clock (One and Five), English/Latin Version (Exhibition Version) 1965, 1997

Clock (One and Five), English/Latin Version (Exhibition Version) 1965, 1997 by Joseph Kosuth born 1945

These two works is one of the representative works of conceptual art, the concept art, I think, it is not see a problem from the representation, these works of art is not a simple some arts and crafts, but the creators to express their inner thoughts and designed, simple but not monotonous, each work can express a kind of individual consciousness and the idea.Only text and images can be seen from the name of that kind of expression form, it is very unique.

NO.3- Choose a piece of land art and discuss it – how could it influence your own work?

Like this picture, the vortex in the sand, is very beautiful, is also a kind of unique form of artistic expression.Designers use the natural elements on the earth to create wonderful art, it also gave me inspiration on fashion, in fact.Nature, rotation.

18/10/2016-Minimalism

  • history of minimalism

Minimalism is something we take for granted. The idea that there is virtue in stripping away, that simplicity can be beautiful, and give rise to its own special kind of complexity, is one that feels as old as the world itself – but it’s relatively new.

In music in particular, minimalism was the single most important idea of the last century, the one that made possible virtually all that we now listen to and hold dear, from punk and techno to ambient and grime. Minimalism wasn’t just a movement, it was a paradigm shift: it brought about a sea change in the way that sound is made, heard and thought of.

The first half of the 20th century had seen classical music back itself into a corner. In trying to break with tradition, “serialist” composers like Arnold Schoenberg and Pierre Boulez pursued atonality and dissonance. Technically impressive, the resulting work was also incredibly ugly; radical, certainly, but unlistenable. The real revolution would come later, and would be a whole lot easier on the ears.

Minimalism is one of the most distinctive of all the complex forms of art. Because minimalism is a simple form of artistic expression, in any way have changed. There is no surrealist magic, no conceptual complexity.

  • Discuss two minimalist pieces of work

Minimalist works is the most important feature is simple, may be the single color, single graph, the expression of single. The rise of minimalism is the impact of the art world, a colorful corner of the world in a quiet.

  1. The first picture is a simple little rabbit, but we can very clearly see the rabbit shape, and mint green background on collocation, appear the whole picture special lovely, let a person look very comfortable.
  2. I was especially fond of minimalism, so I have a large collection of minimalist watches, jewelry and so on.The second let watch on the picture let me once again feel I have the love of minimalism, that is the feeling of a clear, there are no complicated emotions.Although minimalism and modern art may not be the same, but they are all the characteristics of an art.

  • How do you see minimalism influencing art and design today?

If minimalism influence on contemporary art, I think it is minimalism to have played an important role in a cornerstone of contemporary art as pop art.Minimalist elements still exists in contemporary art, a lot of things in our life or contain minimalist elements, I think it very well.Mixed and disorderly colour profusion of contemporary art, minimalism is a clean and quiet place.

  • What is your overall feelings about minimalism? And why do you feel this?

Minimalism is, in my opinion, a simple expression, use the most simple color, graphics, text to express his thoughts.I see it that way because of minimalist art, basic it is could at least, at least try to put all can express express things depend on the little things.A piece of blank paper on a tiny part is used for painting, or writing.

11/10/2016-contextual studies

  • pop art

Pop art is short for popular art, popular art), also known as the new realism (Italian new realism Neorealismo), because Pop art of Pop (Pop art) are usually regarded as a word “popular, modern” (popular). It represents a kind of popular culture. In the United States under the influence of modern civilization and an international art movement, more social upper image or drama to the accidental events as the performance content.

In my opinion, pop art is more of a spirit and essence.   Pop art is a living art, based on a different era, the life of advertising, style, books and other aspects of the change. Increased visual sense. Some famous pioneer of American pop art is: j. Johns and r. in lausanne, the biggest impact of the artist is a. warhol, Dane, r. j. lichtenstein, c. Alden berg, t. wei selman, j. g. rosenquist and sculptors segal.Collection of art and the occasional art is generally regarded as two branches of pop art.

  • artists

Roy Fox Lichtenstein  was an American pop artist. During the 1960s, along with Andy Warhol, Jasper Johns, and James Rosenquist among others, he became a leading figure in the new art movement. His work defined the premise of pop art through parody. Inspired by the comic strip, Lichtenstein produced precise compositions that documented while they parodied, often in a tongue-in-cheek manner. His work was influenced by popular advertising and the comic book style. He described pop art as “not ‘American’ painting but actually industrial painting”.  His paintings were exhibited at the Leo Castelli Gallery in New York City.

Richard William Hamilton  was an English painter and collage artist. His 1955 exhibition Man, Machine and Motion(Hatton Gallery, Newcastle upon Tyne) and his 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today’s homes so different, so appealing?, produced for the This Is Tomorrow exhibition of the Independent Group in London, are considered by critics and historians to be among the earliest works of pop art. A major retrospective of his work was at Tate Modern until May 2014.

  • Compare and Contrast two paintings

These two photos as the representative work of pop art, are of color images, are using face painting, look good, different expression may be different.

  • Discuss Pop Arts influence on modern art and the world today.

Maybe pop art is the foundation of modern art, and it can bring inspiration to modern art, color design and so on, and there are many similarities in modern art.Particularly interesting, I also like this kind of art form.

4/10/2016-contextual about Expressionist

-SOMETHING ABOUT

Expressionism was a modernist movement, initially in poetry and painting, originating in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century. Its typical trait is to present the world solely from a subjective perspective, distorting it radically for emotional effect in order to evoke moods or ideas.

Expressionist mainly appeared in Germany at the time, Expressionist on the impact of the art is very large. It is different from the Impressionist paintings, with distorted painting style and strong colors for visual impact. In short, Expressionist is to express the form of exaggeration to the creation of works expressed, on the reality of a social impression, it may be anxious or intense.

ABSTRACT EXPRESSIONIST ARTISTS

1.Paul Jackson Pollock (January 28, 1912 – August 11, 1956), known professionally as Jackson Pollock, was an influential American painter and a major figure in the abstract expressionist movement. He was well known for his unique style of drip painting.

During his lifetime, Pollock enjoyed considerable fame and notoriety; he was a major artist of his generation. Regarded as reclusive, he had a volatile personality, and struggled with alcoholism for most of his life. In 1945, he married the artist Lee Krasner, who became an important influence on his career and on his legacy.

Pollock died at the age of 44 in an alcohol-related single-car accident when he was driving. In December 1956, four months after his death, Pollock was given a memorial retrospective exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City. A larger, more comprehensive exhibition of his work was held there in 1967. In 1998 and 1999, his work was honored with large-scale retrospective exhibitions at MoMA and at The Tate in London.

NO.1 work

The deep (1953)

The picture gives a person a kind of deep feeling, like a hole black part, bottomless hole, like the hole can bring us to the hell.

NO.2 work

willem de kooning woman I(1950-2)

The painting with a lot of color, image, although is a mess, but we could see very clearly a woman’s face, chest and legs.Perhaps the action painting is the meaning of the things that make people look and feel of the picture what are you doing for in action.

2.Mark Rothko  born Markus Yakovlevich Rotkovich (Russian: Ма́ркус Я́ковлевич Ротко́вич, Latvian: Markuss Rotkovičs; September 25, 1903 – February 25, 1970), was an American painter of Russian Jewish descent. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist. With Jackson Pollock and Willem de Kooning, he is one of the most famous postwar American artists.

no.3 work

barnett newman(1950-51)

This picture is only one color is red, very simple picture, I don’t know what can I do to describe it, but I think it must be something profound meaning.

In my opinion

When artists in creating these works, I think they are living in a certain context to make these creation, messy lines and rich color, may represent sadness deep color, light color may represent a happy or calm, the appearance of each picture will have a direct purpose, may be the history.

27/9/2016-contextual.

In this class, we continued our last lesson topic of surrealism, that  forms of expression, a kind of surreal expression, so this lesson the teacher let us draw a few random abstract painting.I was surprised to find my first painting can draw a face, have had eyes, mouth and hands with three fingers, we show the art of madness in this mode.Very interesting, but also can vent.

In addition to the above abstract painting, we use several kinds of pattern for collage, I will cat pattern according to different size to print the two points, and clipped them.I will resizing images of rats and clipped head and two hands to stick together, will be another girl on the picture of the hair cut down on the head of the mouse, becomes the lady a mouse, and then two cats on the lady at the back of the mouse.Although very simple, but I think this is a very interesting experience for me.

21/9/2016-drawing and sewing machine

Today I studied how to use the sewing machine , the school sewing machines are different with the Chinese. The Chinese machine all use by our hand, but school sewing machine use with machine and electricity. This was my first time to use this machine. Our teacher taught us how to use the machine, and how to sew the line. My first problem was I can’t sew a straight line. My classmate called Rose , she help me to sew a line, and my teacher gave me some paper and a cloth to try and practice. I used my lunch time to practiced it, I think I must use more time to practice.

In the afternoon, it was visual class time, we went to the street to drawing the buildings. I didn’t how to do, but I followed my idea to drew it, I used one and half hours to finished it, It made me very tired, but I very enjoyed it.
